Passion Pending

During college, I was part of a group that hosted an event to promote community engagement. We were told last minute that we had to walk up on stage holding a sign and speak to our “passion.” Other group members enthusiastically spoke about their passion to promote the arts or end child hunger.

My sign said “passion pending.”

I had a lot of anxiety that I hadn’t figured it out yet. Everyone else had this emotionally charged vision of what life would be like, and I could only think of all the things I didn’t want to do.

As I approached graduation, this feeling intensified. Well-meaning mentors and icons encouraged me and my peers to follow our passion. There was pressure to find a job that was soul fulfilling, which is a lot to ask of an inexperienced 22 year old.

Six years later and I am just beginning to understand what type of work energizes me.

So if you find yourself in this position, cut yourself a break. Most people don’t know what they are doing, and even if you aren’t in love with your career today, it doesn’t mean you made the wrong choice.

It’s okay to prioritize paying your rent while you figure it out.
